Le chat Bengal est une race fascinante issue du croisement entre un chat domestique et le chat-léopard asiatique (Prionailurus bengalensis), un petit félin sauvage originaire d'Asie, notamment de la province du Bengale. Ce programme d'hybridation a été initié en 1963 par Jean S. Mill, une généticienne américaine passionnée, qui a cherché à combiner l'apparence exotique du chat-léopard avec le tempérament docile des chats domestiques.

Les Bengals présentent une variété de couleurs et de motifs de pelage, chacun résultant de combinaisons génétiques spécifiques. Les principales couleurs reconnues sont :

- Brown (brun) : La teinte la plus courante, avec une base de couleur variant du doré au brun acajou, ornée de motifs noirs ou brun foncé.

- Silver (argenté) : Ces Bengals possèdent une base de pelage argentée avec des motifs noirs ou gris foncé, offrant un contraste saisissant.

- Snow (neige) : Cette catégorie comprend trois variations principales :

- Seal Lynx Point : Résultant du gène siamois, ces chats ont une base de couleur ivoire à crème avec des motifs brun clair à gris, et des yeux bleus perçants.

- Seal Mink : Issus de la combinaison des gènes siamois et burmese, ils présentent une teinte de fond crème à beige avec des motifs brun moyen, et des yeux aqua.

- Seal Sepia : Portant le gène burmese, ces Bengals ont une base de couleur chaude avec des motifs brun foncé, et des yeux verts ou dorés.

En termes de motifs, on distingue principalement :

- Spotted (tacheté) : Caractérisé par des taches rondes ou en forme de rosettes réparties aléatoirement sur le corps, rappelant le pelage des léopards.

- Marbled (marbré) : Présente de larges bandes tourbillonnantes, créant un effet marbré unique, similaire aux motifs des chats sauvages comme l'ocelot.

La génétique complexe du Bengal permet également l'apparition de variations moins courantes, telles que le Blue (bleu), avec une teinte gris-bleu et des motifs plus clairs, et le Charcoal (charbon), présentant une base sombre avec des motifs contrastés en gris foncé ou noir.

Chaque combinaison de couleur et de motif confère au Bengal une apparence unique, faisant de cette race un véritable trésor pour les amateurs de chats au look sauvage et au caractère domestique.
